What is OpenID?

Why do we use it? Why should you use it?

What is OpenID?
OpenID is a new way to establish your identity on the Internet. You use the same ID on multiple websites, and there is only one password you need to remember for all those sites. Better yet, you never have to give your password to an OpenID site, which means better security and less hassle.
How does it work?
Just type your OpenID into the form and click the submit button. We then work with your Identity Provider to figure out if you are the person you say you are. Depending upon your Identity Provider, you may be automatically logged in (if you have already visited your Provider today), or you might be asked to log in. Either way, we never know the information you use to log in to your Identity Provider. We only know your OpenID.
Isn't that less secure?
No. OpenID was built with security in-mind. An imposter cannot log in as you if he/she doesn't have access to your account at your Identity Provider. Because of this, as long as you keep your Identity Provider credentials secure, your OpenID will always be secure.
What exactly is an OpenID?
An OpenID can be a web address (joe.livejournal.com) or an iName (=joe.schmoe). If you don't know what an iName is, don't worry - you're not alone. If you own your own web address, you can use that as your OpenID. All you need to do is add some code to your home page. Your Identity Provider will have information on how to do that.
How do I get an OpenID?
You might already have one. If you're a member of LiveJournal, then it's your LiveJournal address (username.livejournal.com). If you have an AOL or AIM account, then it's openid.aol.com/username. There are many other websites that provide OpenIDs as apart of membership. Be aware that these sites usually do not support all OpenID features.
If you would rather use a dedicated Identity Provider (you get more features!), then you can try MyOpenID or Verisign PIP.
Why did Three Pound Films implement OpenID?
We wanted an easy way to allow people to leave comments and interact with the site without needing to register a username and password with us. We understand that you will not be at Three Pound Films every day, and do not need the burden of remembering yet another password.
I have never seen this before. Aren't you doing this to just be different?
Yes and no. OpenID is definitely a new concept, which makes us different. However, it is being adopted at dozens of new sites every day. We won't be different for very long.
This FAQ is terrible! Where can I get more information on OpenID?
Go to openid.net to learn a whole lot more about OpenID.
